How to Dress and Act Like a Hipster

What is a hipster exactly? A hipster is the type that finds other forms of what is popular, listen to indie music, and wear ironic clothing. They usually have a sarcastic and ironic sense of humor, don't answer a question directly, and they'll usually answer with an obvious lie that is "snooty".

Hipsters enjoy making fun of the current music (Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Rihanna, ect.). They enjoy music such as M83, Grateful Dead, Electric President, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Jens Lekman, ect. They can also be found talking to their friends about bands they've never even heard of. As a hipster you should never say you love all music because you'll give off the wrong impression of a hipster and you'll seem like a wanna-be, be sure you criticize some bands. Hipsters attend just about every show they can and they do their own hair.

Unless you live around many other hipsters, the hipster lifestyle might not be for you as most will insult you rather than understand you. Brooklyn is the best place to live for hipsters, that's where most of them are located. They also like to live in Chicago since it gets so cold and frigid, like most hipsters attitudes. It's okay for them to live in LA as long as they don't fall into the culture of California.

So now that you have the attitude down, you need the wear. Hipsters usually shop on vintage websites, Urban Outfitters, thrift stores, and salvation army. They do this because they want to sport the retro older clothes of the 1950s-1980s.  

Most hipsters will be caught wearing ironic t-shirts, probably a retro game character like Donkey Kong or old cartoon on them such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Smurfs, ect. Tees that have logos from 80's sitcoms and spandex-y black and white tees.

Hipsters definitely favor wearing linen and cotton scarfs, even when it's not cold. Anything that is plaid or checkered will definitely work. However, Keffiyah scarves have been very popular. Don't tie your scarf, let it hang carefree around your neck.

Skinny Jeans- This doesn't mean bootcuts from the 90's. This means pants that are so tight they just about cut your circulation to your brain. They wear skinny jeans that are black, blue, or bright colored.

For sneaks, hipsters definitely prefer converse over any other brand. They especially love high tops. Just make sure you bang them up a bit when you get a new pair of converse sneakers.

For accessories, make sure you gear up with a messenger bag and Ray Ban glasses. Girls can also wear large, intrusive jewelery.

Once you have the right attitude and gear, people will definitely start noticing you as a hipster. Whether that's a good thing or bad really depends on your geographical area, ya dig?

im 16 im mostly interested in a messenger bag for school, ive looked at juicy couture, urban outfitters, lucky brand etc.. maybe im not looking at the right brands. i just moved to southern california, what brands are considered the 'cool' ones so i dont come in with a cheap tacky brand?
