There was a time when an attaché case was the only business-oriented bag that professionals used to carry their important documents and stationery to and from work. It usually had a hard exterior, a handle on top and a locking system for security. But as laptops replaced paper, the boring, old attaché case was also usurped by a barrage of smart looking and functional business cases.

The modern day professional is spoiled for choice as far as business cases are concerned. Some popular business cases of our time include:

1. Laptop Briefcase: This type of bag is the preferred choice of professionals who work in industries where there is a strict "business attire only" dress code. It's rectangular in shape, has a handle on top, and sometimes a shoulder strap for alternate carrying. Besides a computer compartment, most laptop briefs also have an organizer section to arrange files, peripherals, stationery, and tech gear. Types of laptop cases include clamshell, expandable, messenger style, and slim briefs. The really high end and designer ones are made from leather, but many good quality laptop briefcases are made from nylon.
2. Rolling Brief: This is another type of laptop brief with the main difference being that it has wheels for ease of transport. A rolling brief is ideal for the frequent business traveler, who has to run from one airport gate to another trying to catch connecting flights. Some rolling briefs can also be expanded to accommodate a change of clothing – a convenient option for overnight trips.
3. Laptop Backpack: A hands-free alternative to briefs, laptop backpacks are a great way to protect your valuable gear from knocks and bumps. A laptop backpack usually has a protective sleeve for the computer and lots of storage space for other items. The good quality ones have adjustable, ergonomic shoulder straps and mesh padding on the back for comfortable carrying. There are many types of laptop backpacks – tactical, sporty, casual, and professional to name a few.
4. Messenger Bag: This rather casual looking bag is suited for professions who can afford relaxed dressing, such as radio, advertising, IT, graphic design, etc. They are sack-like bags that are worn cross body in mailman style. Messenger bags can have an in-built or detachable computer sleeve as well as pockets and compartment to organize other things.
5. Laptop Purse: This type of laptop bag is mostly carried by the ladies although some man purses or murses, if you please, also exist. They look like typical handbags, but have a protective sleeve for a laptop. A laptop purse is perfect for professional women who prefer feminine looking handbags to briefs or backpacks. The only caveat is that these may not offer as much space and organization as a brief or a backpack.
6. Laptop Sleeve: A laptop sleeve is ideal for professionals who don't need a full case, just a protective cover for their laptops. A sleeve is also handy if you use a bag that doesn't have a separate compartment for a laptop. Instead of wrapping your laptop in towels or blankets for protection, just slip it one of the safe laptop sleeves and put it inside the bag.

   If you travel on work often, it would really help if your business case meets TSA approved checkpoint friendly guidelines. It will not only guard your laptop against theft and damage, but also make your security screenings that much quicker. Some known brands that make such business cases are Briggs & Riley, TravelPro, Tumi, and Victorinix.

Ten Things To Make Your Travel Easy

One of the most important things of course you will do before contemplating planning an itinerary is to make sure you have a valid visa for the duration of your visit. Once that is done you can then plan your stops and buy your ticket, change your money. You will have to carry certain basic things that you will need away from home.

One of the most important things that you will have to purchase or make sure that you have is a good travel bag that can hold most of your clothes and essentials. It should be of high quality to withstand all the poor handling from baggage handlers and being thrown around; otherwise a cheap bag will just burst open. Buy a size that is big enough to hold your stuff or two bags. An over packed bag will easily get damaged. They should be wheeled and lockable or buy locks for them.

You will need a backpack or tote bag that will not be checked in for all your documents and anything else you need in-flight if you are flying. These may include medication, passports, valuables, business documents and personal care items. If you have lots of documents or items that you do not wish to check in get a back pack that can also be wheeled around. You do not want to have to lug it around the airport waiting for your connection or looking for your boarding gate. It is not very interesting.

Travel map and books are good for getting you there and pointing out interesting places to see especially if you are travelling solo than in a guided your group.

If you do not speak the language of the country invest in a small book with simple phrases in the language of your destination it may help you get out of difficult situations. If you are the type to keep a diary then get one preferable

An inflatable neck pillow is a good idea whether you are flying, car riding or using the train for head support.

A travel first aid kit is a good idea as accidents can happen anywhere and that can be very far away from a hospital or any help at all.

A water purification kit is an essential especially when travelling to developing countries; where drinkable water may be rare, and it is cheaper anyway than buying bottled water.

You will need converters and adapters for your any of your electrical appliance that you may need with you. You may also need a travel size hairdryer and curling iron depending on your style. A spot remover is a good idea to have since hotel laundry can be expensive; it will cut costs. Look for a good quality one that does not leave a ring on clothes nor damage them.

There are basic backpacks, which will simply carry the books to school and backpacks, which are capable of handling extreme elements for outdoor camping. Some backpacks are designed to hold specialized equipment like mp3 players or laptops. Therefore, if you are interested to know more about outdoor backpacking, you are in the right place.

Below listed are some of the different types of outdoor backpacks available in the market today:

External Frame Backpacks:

External frame backpacking backpacks are backpacks that have the support structure of the backpack on the outside of the backpack. These packs are good for heavy loads, and flat hiking. They are not the best for very long distance travel, but work great if you are carrying a lot of equipment.

Internal Frame Backpacks:

Internal frame backpacks are much more lightweight and more easily maneuverable. The frame of the pack is on the inside, and there is ample storage for all your gear. With the new backpacks with telescopic handles and wheels are made to be less noticeable when they are in use. Nevertheless, when the students will walk to schools, these backpacks keep the tension of a heavy backpack for children.

Laptop Backpacks:

As more and more students, especially secondary school and university students have begun to take their laptops with them to school; new styles of backpacks have emerged that are designed to carry a laptop safely. When searching for a laptop bag, the final form must follow function. As there are different types of laptop backpacks in the market today, you will be able to opt for the one definitely, which suits your requirements. A laptop backpack should be able to first keep your computer safe, and look fashionable. Fortunately, it is difficult to find one that does both.

Laptop bags should be well padded to absorb the shock of the backpack should fall to the ground while the computer is inside. In recent years, many backpacks are designed with this in mind, and now you can get backpacks in a variety of sizes. Some of these smaller bags also come with designs that the interest of younger students such as cartoon characters, television and music personalities or camouflage. These backpacks are designed to carry only the basics such as books and pencils.

Sports backpacks:

Currently, there are backpacks, which are mainly designed to carry sports utilities for the students. For example, a backpack that is designed for a student who plays football can have a large mesh pocket in front to hold a soccer ball clay. You can also have a section of ventilation to place tacos and socks. There are also some backpacks available in the market, which are specially designed to carry the baseball bats and gloves and designed to carry the basketball team. I know it's weird... but tomorrow i'll be going to a STUDENT job fair. would it be appropriate to wear a tote bag/backpack/or Messenger Bag? or even something else?

No backpack. Carry a portfolio big enough for a legal pad to take notes and copies of your resume.

The backpack is for class, not for the interview process.

Other than that your outfit sounds fine.

More than 40 million American students use backpacks, from toddlers to college students. They're a simple, effective way to carry around books and other necessary items.

Most people, however, wear and load their backpacks incorrectly, which can lead to a lifetime of problems. Incorrectly worn backpacks can injure muscles and joints, and lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as posture problems that can persist for years. In 2001, more than 7000 emergency room visits nationwide were related to backpacks.

All these problems, however, are quite easily avoidable.

Selecting the Right Preschool backpack

The first step is to select the right backpack. Good features to look for are wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back, a waist strap to distribute weight more evenly across the body. The best backpacks are lightweight and have multiple compartments so that the weight is not centered in one place.

You might also consider a rolling backpack, although they are more difficult to move up stairs and over uneven outdoor terrain.

Talk about Backpack Safety with Your Child

You should also talk to your child about wearing and using his or her backpack correctly. Tighten the straps so that the backpack is close to the body and sits about two inches above the waist. Show your child how to pick up the pack right, by bending at the knees and lifting from the legs.

Put heavy textbooks closest to the body, and tell your child to always use both shoulder straps. Kids who wear their backpacks over one shoulder will lean sideways to compensate, which can lead to upper and lower back pain.

Avoid Backpack Overload

Overloading is another serious issue and source of discomfort. Doctors and physical therapists recommend that children carry no more than 10-15% of their body weight. Yet the average student carries close to 25%, and 3 out of 10 wear backpacks with a third of their body weight.

Talk to your children to make sure they aren't carrying all their textbooks home every day. Make sure that the school allows them to make frequent stops at their lockers, and consider purchasing a second set of textbooks to keep at home. Let your child know that he or she shouldn't carry around unnecessary items such as CD players or video games in their backpacks.

Ask your child about any back or shoulder pain, and keep an eye out for signs of discomfort. Heavy, improperly loaded weights will pull the children backwards, forcing them to compensate by leaning forward at the hips or arching their back. Thin straps can also pose a problem, inhibiting circulation and causing tingling or numbness.

If you are still concerned, consider talking to your child's school about educating students about proper backpack use.

What kind of luggage is best while traveling in Europe?

I will be traveling with one other person to London, Paris, and Amsterdam. What is the best type of luggage (backpack, duffle bag, wheels) to use when getting around from airport to hotels? Also, what is the best way to carry money, credit cards, etc....a purse? money belt?

I have traveled all over the Czech Republic, London, and Germany. What worked best for me is this type of backpack:

The reason I go with a backpack is not that it's heavy, because once you have it on, it's actually pretty comfortable, but that its easier to travel with. Rolling suitcases are annoying to try and travel with if you plan on moving at all.

As for your money, keep some on your person but most stowed away in your luggage. Make sure that the money is not in any of your back pants pockets, as it can easily get stolen there. For documents I reccomend gettng one of those carriers you get that go around your neck. I put mine inside my shirt when I'm not in need of it. It looks a little dorky, but when I need the stuff from it I take it off and when I dont need it, its hidden below my shirt.

Nakshi Kantha

Etymology

The word kantha has no satisfactory etymological root. The exact time of origin of kantha is not accurately known but it probably had a precursor in kheta (khet in Hindi and Bangla means "field"). According to Niaz Zaman the word kantha originated from Sanskrit word kontha meaning rags as kantha is made of rags.

The Kantha Tradition

Like any other folk art kantha making is influenenced by the factors like materials available, daily needs, climate, geography, economic factors. Probably the earliest form of kantha was the patch work kantha and the kanthas of decorative applique type evolved from this.

Kantha in Literature

The earliest mention of Bengal Kantha is found in the book, "Sri Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita" by Krishnadas Kaviraj which was written some five hundred years back.

Kantha Making

Traditionally old saree, lungi and dhoti were used to make kantha. Kantha making was not a full time job and women of almost every household were expert in the art. Rural women worked at leasure time or during the lazy days of rainy season, thus taking months or even years to finish a kantha was normal. At least 5/7 sarees were needed to make a standard size kantha. Today the old materials are replaced by new cotton cloths. Traditionally the thread was collected from the old sarees which is rarely in practise today.

When making a kantha first the sharees are joined together to attain the required size and then layers are spread on the ground. The cloths are smoothed leaving no folds or creases in between. During the process the cloth is kept flat on the ground with weights on the edges. Then the four edges are stitched and two or three rows of large running stitches are done to keep the kantha together. At this stage the kantha can be folded and stitched at leisure time.

Originally designs and motifs were not drawn on the cloth. The design was first outlined with needle and thread followed by focal points and then the filling motifs were done. In a kantha with a predominant central motif the centre was done first, followed by corner designs and the other details. In some types of kanthas (carpet, lik and sujni, etc) wooden blocks were used to print the outline. The blocks are replaced today by patterns drawn in tracing papers.

Different Types of Kantha

Niaz Zaman in her book The Art of KANTHA Embroidery classified the kanthas in following categories according to the stitch employed:

Running Stitch kantha: Running stitch kantha is truly the indigenous kantha. They are subdevided into Nakshi or figured and par tola or patterned. Nakshi or figured kanthas are again divided into motif kantha or scenic ones.

Lohori Kantha: The name derived from Persian word ehr meaning meaning wave. This kantha is particularly popular in Rajshahi. These kanthas are further divided into soja (straight or simple) kantha, Kautar khupi (pegion coop or triangle), borfi or diamond (charchala, atchala or barachala etc).

Lik or Anarasi (pine apple) Kantha: Found in Chapainawabgonj and Jessore area. The variations are lik tan, lik tile, lik jhumka, lik lohori.

Cross Stitch or Carpet Kantha: This kantha was introduced by the English during the British Rule in India. The stitch employed in these kanthas are cross stitch.

Sujni Kantha: This kantha is Found only in Rajshahi area.The popular motif used is undulating floral and vine motif.

Influence of Religion and Folk Belief

Kantha Stitches

The earliest and most basic stitch found in kanthas is the running stitch. The predominant form of this stitch is called kantha the phor or kantha stitch. The other form of stitches used are Chatai or pattern darning, Kaitya or bending stitch, weave running stitch darning, Jessore stitch(a variation of darning stitch), threaded running stitch, Lik phor or anarasi or ghar hasia (Holbein stitch). The stitches used in modern day kantha are the Kasmiri stitch and the arrow head. Stitches like herring bone, satin stitch, back stitch and cross stitch are occasionally used

Various Articles

Kanthas generally denote quilts used as wrappers; all articles made by quilting old cloth may also be referred to by the same generic name. However, depending on the size and purpose kanthas may be divided into various articles, each with its specific names. The various articles of kantha are as follows:

Quilt (lep in Bangla)

A light quilted covering made from the old sarees/dhotis/lungis and sometimes from sheet cloths.

Large spread (Naksi Kantha in Bangla)

An embellished quilt embroidered in traditional motifs and innovative style

Puja floor spread (Ason in Bangla)

Cloth spraed for sitting at a place of worship or for honoured guest.

Cosmetic wrapper (Arshilota in Bangla)

A narrow embroidered wrapper to roll and store away a woman's comb, mirror, eye kohl,vermilion, sandal paste, oil bottle etc.Often a tying string is found to bind the wrap as in later day satches.

Wallet (Batwa thoiley in Bangla)

Small envelop shaped bag for keeping money, betel leaves etc.

Cover for Quran (ghilaf in Arabic and Bangla)

Envelope shaped bag to cover the Holy Quran

Prayer mats (Jainamaz in Bangla)

Mats used by Muslims to say prayers.

Floor spread (Galicha in Bangla)

Coverings for floor.

Cloths wrapper (Bostani, guthri in Bangla)

A square wrapper for books and other valuables.

Cover (Dhakni in Bangla)

Covering cloths of various shapes and sizes.

Ceremonial meal spread (Daster khan in Bangla)

A spread for eating place, used at meal time.

Pillow cover (Balisher chapa or oshar in Bangla)

A flat single piece pillow cover.

Handkerchief (Rumal)

Small and square in shape.

Modern day articles

Today newer uses are found for nakshi kanthas like bedspreads, wall hanging, cushon covers, ladies' purses, place mats, jewellary boxes, dress fronts, skirts border, shawls and sharees

Motifs

Motifs of the nakshi kantha are deeply influenced by religious belief and culture. Even though no specific strict symmetry is followed a finely embroidered naksi kantha will always have a focal point. Most kanthas will have a lotus as focal point, around the lotus there are undulating vines or floral motifs or shari border motifs. The motifs may include images of flower and leaves, birds and fish, animals, kithen forms even toilet articles.

While most kantas have some initial pattern, no two naksi kantas are same. Traditionals motifs are repeated, the individualtouch in variety of stitches, colours and shapes. The notabale motifs found in naksi kantha are as follows:

The Lotus Motif

Lotus motif

Lotus motif is the most common motif found in kanthas. This motif is associated with Hindu iconography and thus is also very popular in the kantha. Lotus is the devine seat, it is also symbolic of cosmic harmony and essential womanhood. Lotus is the symbol of eternal order, of the union earth water and sky. It represents the life giving power of water but is also associated with the sun for the opening and closing of the petals. It is also the symbol of recreating power of life. With the drying up of water the lotus dies and with the rain it springs to life again. Lotus is associated with purity and the goddess Laksmi, the goddess of good fortune and abundance. There are various forms of lotus motifs like eight-petalled astadal padma to the hundred petalled satadal. In the older kanthas the central motif is almost always a fully bloomed lotus seen from above.

The Solar Motif

The solar motif ic closely associated with the lotus motif. Often the lotus and the solar motifs are found together at in the centre of a nakshi kantha. The solar motif symbolizes the life giving power of the sun. The sun is associated with the fire which plays a significant part in Hindu rites, religious and matrimonial.

The Moon Motif

The moon motif has a religious influence and is popular amongst the Muslims. Mostly it is in the form of crescent accompanied by a star. The motif is particularly found in jainamaz kanthas.

The Wheel Motif

The wheel is a common symbol in Indian art, both Hindu and buddhist. It is the symbol of order and order. The wheel also represents the world. The wheel is a popular motif in kanthas even when the maker has forgotten the significance of the symbol. The motif is relatively easy to make with chatai phor.

The Swastika Motif

Su asti in Sanskrit means it is well. As a motif in Indian art it dates back to Indus Valley civilization. It is symbol of good fortune. It is also known as muchri or golok dhanda. With the passage of time the design is more curvilinear than the four armed swastika of the Mohenjodaro seal. The synmbolic design has significant influence in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

The Tree of Life Motif

The influence of this motif in Indian Art and Culture (as with kantha) may be traced back to Indus Valley civilization. It is likely that the Indus people conceived the pipal as the Tree of Life...with the devata inside embodying the power of fecundity. During the Buddhist times the cult of tree continued. Pipal is sacred to the Buddha because he received enlightenment under its shade. It reflects the fecundity of nature and is very popular in Bengal. Vines and Creepers play an important role in kanthas and they contain the same symbolisation as that of tree of life. A popular motif in Rajshahi lohori is betel leaf.

The Kalka Motif

This is a latter day motif, dating from Mughal times. Kalka or paisley motif originated in Persia and Kashmir and has become an integral image of the subcontinental decorative motif. It can be compared with a stylized leaf,mango or flame. The kalka is an attractive motif and number of varieties are experimented. Similar motifs can be found in traditional kashmiri Shawls.

In a surprise move, the Los Angeles Dodgers improved their team by acquiring veteran pitcher Jon Garland and the number 12 all-time home run hitting, Jim Thome.

Garland is expected to pitch every five games, which would put him on track to take the mound six times between now and the post-season. Thome, who hasn't played a fielding position for two years, is expected to pinch-hit off the bench.

Exactly how much have the Dodgers improved through these pick-ups?

Hard to say, really, but if the presence of Garland and Thome makes the team just 2% better, then they will have pulled their weight.

Two percent, expressed as a percentage of games during the remaining ones to be played comes to winning just a single, additional contest above that which the men in blue would otherwise do.

Is a one-game edge worth the trouble of potentially upsetting the clubhouse chemistry the Dodgers have enjoyed, so far this season?

With only a five and one-half game lead over the Diamondbacks and Giants, a one game cushion might be necessary to win the division. Moreover, if the Dodgers play as poorly in September as they did in August, one game could mean winning versus losing the wild card slot in the post-season.

On a forty-man roster, two players constitute a 5% difference in the makeup of personnel. Maybe that translates into a plus two-game advantage, overall, by season's end.

And who knows whether Thome can make all the difference with a single stroke of the bat, or Garland with a successful start in the post-season.

Having already improved the team by trading for infielder Belliard and pitchers Sherrill and Padilla, the Dodgers are practiced in making incremental improvements, instead of giant leaps, as they did last year in adding the bat of Manny Ramirez.

Football may be a game of inches, but baseball is revered for its percentages. And the Dodgers, so far, seem to be playing them just right.

We all use laptops for various reasons. Some of us have to carry it to work, some of us to our college, still others just as an accessory we simply can't do without. Whatever your reasons for having a laptop, you need to be able to transport it properly in a good quality bag. Laptop backpacks are just the right item to have to carry them around safe and sound. People often make the mistake of just stuffing everything into a single bag, on a trip. Get a great deal on a two-wheel. How can you find that perfect Scooter?

You're sick of riding on four wheels your entire life? Or is it the MTA that gets more expensive and less efficient? Maybe is just the shiny sexy two-wheeled creatures that you can't take your eyes off? Whatever it is - you've made a great choice. Scooters are the best and cheapest way to get around town. But buying a scooter is not easy. There are a few things you should keep in mind before you choose your perfect scooter:

1.    Test Drive - Don't be shy and take the little devil on a ride. Even if it looks like the perfect scooter and it's got that new scooter smell, it might not be comfortable to ride. Just like a car, you can learn a lot about the scooter by taking it for a short spin. See how responsive it is, see how fast it goes, and how many girls are looking at your direction.

2.    Check storage room - and passenger room. Scooters don't come with an awful lot of trunk space. You can't put a hostage in it, that's for sure. But you should be able to fit in a grocery bag at least. Come prepared with a backpack or a normal size somethingy that you tend to carry around with you. Even if you are a loner, you should be able to store an extra helmet and go for a two-seater. You don't want to leave that good looking guy that was checking out your scooter behind.

3.    Miles per Gallon - some of them little bastards can do 100 miles per gallon. You got that right. Try and aim for the best MPG possible. You'll thank yourself for saving that extra trip to the gas station.  

4.    Buy major brands - it's called SYM not SiM. Launderetti is not a production line of Andretti. Don't be fooled to buy a scooter that you didn't hear about, even if the salesman is saying that it's Paris Hilton's favorite

5.    Get a good chain - Scooters are an easy steal. Especially if you get your self a sexy looking two-wheeler. Don't use your kids bicycle chain. The bad guys can cut it with nail scissors. Make sure you buy a trust-worthy chain. It shouldn't cost more than 50-60 bucks and it's sure worth the investment.

6.    And a good insurance - we just said that there's a good chance you'll go to the bank and come back to find out that you are walking home today. Insurance for scooters is really cheap, about 100 dollars a year. Put an extra dime and save yourself some headache in case of a stolen scooter.

7.    Invest in gear - Buy a good helmet. You will thank yourself when it saves your life. If you live in a rainy/dusty/buggy area, you might want to buy a full head helmet that can protect you from rain/dust/bugs. Get a durable coat that has protection and can help other drivers see you better.  

8.    Buy Electric - If you really want to save money, exercise and go green - check out an electric scooter. They can go up to 30 miles per hour and up to 40 miles distance on a single charge. Just like in the good ol' days, the battery will recharge when you go down hill, and you have paddles - just in case.

1. For invitations, you can purchase Thomas the Train invites from Zippa.  Or use colorful (blue, green, and red) paper or card stock and train stickers to make your own invitations. Write the party details on the inside of the invitations.

2.  To decorate your party table, use colorful themed plates, bowls, forks and spoons. Put a themed large bowl or centerpiece in the middle of the table, filled with goodies and snacks. 

For the cake, bake a vanilla cake and then frost it with blue or white frosting. Put a candle with your child's favorite character in the middle of the cake. Then, surround that candle with smaller white and blue candles. Or place small circular print-outs of  trains around the cake.  This would make a perfect cake for the party.

3. Make sure to hang up a Thomas the Train Banner to greet your guests as they come to the party!  Also hang up lots of themed balloons. Add blue, white and red streamers.

4. As the kids start to arrive for the party, you can give them each a Blow out and a Conductor Hat. You also may want to set out some train coloring books for the kids to color as you wait for the rest of the guests to arrive.

5. For a exciting game, you can play "The Conductor Says." It is played just like Simon Says except the person that's "Simon" is actually "The Train Conductor". Whoever stays in the longest can win a Tank Engine Ribbon or a Ring Pop.

6. Pinata Time! Fill a Thomas and Friends pinata with Pinata Filler and other themed party favors. You can use the Pinata Blindfold and Bat to blindfold the kids and have them try to break the pinata.

7. For a fun craft, use cardboard and markers and have the kids make their own small replica of their favorite locomotive.   Have them cut out the shape of a train out of cardboard and then design and color it with the markers, crayons, etc... You can also use some buttons for the wheels of their train and Foam Stickers to decorate the side of their trains.

8. When the party is over, give each of the kids a Ribbon so they all feel like winners.  You can create original awards for each child or each child's train:  "Most Imaginative", "Most Enthusiastic", "Fastest", etc.

9. For party bags, use Thomas the Tank Loot Bags and fill them with these favors: Marshmallow Pops, Candy Watches, Push Pop Candy, and a Blowout. These will send all your guests home with a smile.

10. To thank your guests for coming, use themed Thank You's and have you or your child write a thank you note on the inside of each card.
