That Dora the Explorer could use a little more common sense in the presentation!? I mean come on! My daughters have this one video in which there are horses running towards Dora and Boots and all they do is say stop and then look in her backpack (that takes forever, because they do not speed it up!) for something. If that was real life (henceforth the common sense complaint!) you'd move you butt outta the way not stand there and piddle-fart through you backpack that has things no kid should be carrying on a daily basis anyway! (She carried matches once!! and had no adult with her!) I bug the crap outta my wife when I complain about this!! LOL I love it!

Oh I agree! My daughter actually did learn some Spanish from watching the show, but there are several situations like the one you provided where ACTION would be the first and foremost in real life, but Dora and Boots are rummaging in her backpack or encouraging the at-home audience to speak at the tv in Spanish in order to avert the impending disaster.

Remember when, in the 80's, we were so excited about the number pads on the car doors so we could enter the car just by entering some combination of numbers...not by using our key? Well, with today's technology, we now have keyless entry remote systems on cars, not just luxury cars but for many different types of cars.

Keyless entry remote is often found on the luxury cars as with a click of the button, the car is armed and other security features are activated. All of the insurance companies love them since the high-tech security systems that come with these expensive autos are armed without much thought required by the drivers. Police departments love them, because many of the keyless entry systems come with a 'low-jack' feature to track stolen cars.

If the car is touched, jiggled, moved or an attempt is made to enter without the system being disarmed, lights will flash and the horn will sound - loudly. We are all familiar with the car in the parking lot starting to make loud noises, with seemingly no one around. We chuckle at the noise, but we all check to make sure it is not our car that is being 'attacked'.

These car alarm systems work by broadcasting radio waves from your remote system to your car. You can unlock your car before you get to it. The keyless entry is safer for women as you can unlock just the driver's side door or all the doors with your remote button; hence the name keyless entry remote system. It is much more useful than the above mentioned number pad, with one touch of a button you can unlock the vehicle from around thirty feet.

If you are carrying a young child, or bags of grocery, being able to press a button and have the car doors unlock, the trunk opened or, with some systems, a door open, the keyless entry remote system can be a life saver.

Keyless entry systems also have advanced features like remote starting. Having the engine running while the car is still locked can be extremely helpful. If you live in an area with bad winter weather, having the car start warming up before you leave your house or get to the car from the office, is very nice. Or, if you live in the dessert like I do, where summer temperatures are frequently over 110 degrees, which means the inside of the car is way over two hundred degrees after being parked in the sun for just a little while. So, when you can start the car and turn on the air conditioning before you get in the car that's a big deal. Just imagine opening the door and sliding in behind the wheel and being able to touch the wheel when before the keyless entry remote system, you were unable to touch the steering wheel for 2-3 minutes after you physically start the A/C.

An important part of the system is the key fob which holds the transmitter component of the remote system. Without the programmed key fob, there would be no emitted signals to lock or unlock the vehicle. Some of the fobs now have chips embedded in the key itself that completes the ignition sequence and allows the car to start. Accordingly, this 'luxury' keyless entry remote system has become more than a convenience and expanded into a security factor.

Backpackers Guide

You will meet amazing people from all walks of life, learn a lot about yourself and make memories that will last forever, but whilst the most important thing to do is enjoy yourself you also need use your common sense and be prepared. A little forward planning could save you a lot of time, money and hassle.
Safety Travelling alone is probably more rewarding than going with friends, but make sure you let people know where you are. This isn't always possible down to exact location, but the general area or region means that if you are uncontactable for a few days, rescue services at least have a starting point.
Make your travelling companions, tour guide etc aware of any allergies you have and if you start to feel even slightly ill, give them a heads up. It may seem unimportant to you, but malaria and other tropical diseases often start out feeling like a cold.
Don't flash your camera, phone, MP3 player etc around. If you want to truly feel like a backpacker, you will need to fit in and this includes looking like the locals. This includes learning a little of the local language and customs. Also, don't walk about with a guide book because it will make you look like you have just stepped off the plane.
Practical information:
Money wise, the best thing to carry is US Dollars. Obviously you'll have local currency as well, but if you ever get into difficulty particularly in countries in Africa, Asia and South America, US currency will get you a lot further than anything else.
Photocopy your passport and keep it somewhere completely separate from your actual passport. If you do lose your passport or it gets stolen it's much easier and quicker to get a replacement if you have a photocopy with you.
If you are going to be in one country for a while, then buy a local pay as you go sim card. This means that mum and dad can call you and you won't have to foot the bill plus phone cards can also be used from these phones in many countries too. It also makes calling and texting your new friends a lot cheaper. Make sure before you leave the UK that your phone has been unlocked.
Install Skype on your home computer before you leave as many internet cafes in hostels, particularly in Australia and New Zealand now have this facility meaning you can call home completely free.
Planning:
The best and cheapest way to see as much of the world as possible is to buy a round the world flight ticket. These are also some of the most flexible tickets you can buy where changing dates and flight routes will only set you back a minimal charge.
Some things are best done locally. This not only helps support local communities in the countries that need it most, but you can also save your money and retain much more flexibility. This is applicable to tours, transport and accommodation, but also to things like toiletries. Shampoo, deodorant, sun cream etc are heavy, and rather costly in the UK. So save luggage space as well as your hard-earned cash by buying them when you arrive. I'm sure you've heard stories about luggage being lost for days, so in case this happens to you, and with the amount of flying you are going to be doing the probably is greatly increased, keep a spare change of clothes and any medical supplies in your hand luggage.

Which Travel Camera Rules The Ratings -Nikon P100 or Canon PowerShot SX20 IS

Need a great compact (point and shoot) camera for your travel photos with a reliable reputation? Why not consider a Nikon P100 or a Canon SX20 IS? That is exactly what I am doing as I look for a new every day camera that will allow me to not carry a heavy backpack with digital SLR gear all day when traveling. This new point and shoot model will be a kind of back up to my digital SLR.

And here we have it again, the Nikon vs Canon problem. I had this decison to make when buying my very first digital SLR camera, too.

In this case, the super zoom/travel category is again dominated by Nikon and Canon, with a few Panasonics thrown in for good measure. But I am focusing on the top two manufacturers.

It's true, these two camera makers have a lock on the market. They can swager into any digital camera expo with confidence. There are a couple of good reasons for this, too.

First, they have good cameras. Their engineers and designers apparently listen to their camera buyers' feedback, as well as doing their best to stay ahead of the pack when it comes to new technology. They usually put forth excellent products.

Second, they both have excellent marketing programs. And usually, the cameras they promote do what they say, so there is trust in the products.

Cameras that are considered for the travel camera category can also be found in the super-zoom category. The requirement is for a wide range of focal lengths and great image quality. Also, more recently, video has become really important.

OK, what about these two digital beauties: Nikon P100 and Canon SX20 IS. It is truly remarkable how similar they are when comparing features and capabilities. In fact they are so close in many areas, I will not even bother to point those out, because if one camera has a certain element, you can pretty much count on the other having an identical one.

Now that we understand the rules of engagement, let's talk about what is different.

The Nikon P100 has a higher capacity video recording system, with the ability to record 1080p at 30 frames per second. It also has the better LCD screen with 3" vs 2.5" and twice the number of dots per inch for better viewing in tough light situations. It has a higher zoom ratio at 26x (26-678mm) vs 20x (28-560mm) and higher ISO range.

The Canon SX20 wins in fewer categories, but they are important ones. It has a larger capacity sensor with 12.1-megapixels vs 10.3-megapixels. That is not really that significant, but many people value the megapixel count. The key factor for the Canon is that it has a higher Star rating on Amazon, and it has a win in the DPReview "Compact Super-Zoom group test." This comparison by DPReview takes all aspects of camera performance and image quality into consideration. Of course, the Nikon was the runner-up, so it is still a tough call.

How can I get the touch screen on my camera fixed?

I have a Nikon coolpix touch screen that I got four months ago. I had it in my backpack and there is a crack inside the screen. Now the touch screen is not responding very well. Is there anybody I can get to fix it? Can it be fixed? Shouldn't it still be under warranty? Please Help!!!

first, check the all of the papers that came with your camera. one of them is usually a warranty.
if that doesn't work, check their website.
if there is no warranty, or it does not cover your condition, or it requires paperwork that you don't have, camera stores will usually fix it.
if you think their prices are too steep, you may be able to order a replacement screen on the internet (be sure to enter the exact model number when searching on google.)
also, invest in a inexpensive camera bag or case, if you don't have one already.

Internet Tips and Tricks for the Backpacker

As a backpacker you can spend quite a bit of time using the Internet to research your destination, make reservations and staying in touch with friends back home. Follow the below tips to avoid common pitfalls and get the most out of the web.

Picking an Internet café

These days you can find Internet cafés almost everywhere. Ask which connection the Internet café has, it is a huge difference between dial-up and 100 megabit broadband so it may be worth going to the more expensive place if their connection is significantly faster.

Usually the customers share the available bandwidth in the Internet café which means the more clients the slower the connection. An empty café may therefore not necessarily be a bad thing. Check the prices and if there is a minimum time consumption before using the computer.

Hotspots which enable wireless access are spreading quite fast these days. You can find them in airports, shopping malls, restaurants, etc. Sometimes they are free for clients so if you bring your mobile device (laptop, cell phone, etc) you can connect without the need to visit an Internet café. There is also a service called FON which is a large wireless connection community where you get free wireless access to the Internet if you share your connection at home.

If you need to connect your digital camera/media player etc bring a USB-cable. If you do not have one check with the café if they have a USB-cable or a card reader so that you can remove the memory card from your device and connect it to the computer.

Surfing the web

More than once we have composed a nice mail, hit the send button only to get an error message in return. Hitting the back button then only returned a blank screen. ¤&#¤/&#/&¤!! The best way to avoid this is to open up a text editor (e.g. notepad or WordPad) and write your message there. When you are finished select the text, copy it, switch to your e-mail and paste the text.

Those from countries using unusual letters (such as the Swedish letters å, ä, ö) may find it very frustrating trying to find out how to type these letters on foreign keyboards. There are several approaches to solve this:

• Open up Microsoft word. Go to Insert, Symbol, select Normal text, select your characters and press the button Insert.

• Send an e-mail to yourself which contains the special characters while you are at home.

• Open the mail when you are in the Internet café
• Select all the special characters.
• Copy them (use the keyboard shortcut for copying - it is normally ctrl+C).
• Switch to your e-mail program.
• Start writing your e-mail.
• When you need to use your special characters paste them (use the keyboard shortcut for pasting, it is normally: ctrl+V) then delete the ones you do not want to use.
• Next time you need the special characters just paste them again (there is no need to copy them again unless you copied something else later).

• Learn the ASCII-code (a three digit number) of the character you want to type. You can then type the character by holding down the alt-button and typing the ASCII-code. Do not release the alt-button until you have typed all the numbers. If you want to type the letter Å for example just hold down alt and type 143. For a complete listing check out Wikipedia. If someone with a different character set than yours has been using your computer you may find all sort of strange things happening when using the keyboard. Maybe someone from Japan just used the computer and switched to Japanese character set. If the computer has another language set (e.g. Japanese) you can change back to English by right clicking the language bar (bottom right corner with two capital letters e.g. EN) and selecting your preferred language.

If you are on a really slow connection and have a lot of e-mails to open it is useful to right click each message and select open in new window or open the messages in a new tab. While you start reading the first mail, the others will be loading in the background. It may take longer for the windows to open but you save time instead of opening one mail, reading it, going back, opening another mail, etc.

If you are on a slow connection you can disable pictures to make downloading go faster. In Internet Explorer go to: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced. Scroll down to Multimedia and uncheck the checkbox Show pictures. This can drastically speed up your surfing.

It is also a good idea to have several windows open if you are visiting different web sites (in the Internet Explorer menu bar select: File/New/Window). Type the URLs in the different windows and read the one which loads first while the others load. Switch between the windows as they finish loading.

Sometimes you get asked if you want the browser or chat program (e.g. MSN Messenger) to remember your password. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT select yes if you are on a shared computer. Choosing yes means that your password is saved and the next person who surfs to the same site can get into it without knowing the password. Also do not forget to log out after you finish, do not just close the window. Many times we have been to Internet cafés where someone left MSN Messenger open while they were logged in. We could easily have opened their mail, sent messages to their contacts, etc. Log out.

If you enjoy playing video games you can often find the same game installed on the Internet cafés. If you want to keep going you can save your save game to the hard drive and e-mail it to yourself. Next time you want to continue playing just download it to the save game directory and you are set to go.

If you connect your camera/media player/memory card to a computer you should take care when disconnecting your device. Before you disconnect your device click on the icon in the lower right corner called Safe removal of hardware (if available). Select your device in the window which pops up and select disconnect. Wait until you get a confirmation message that your hardware can be removed safely before disconnecting your device. This process informs Windows that you intend to remove the device and ensures that you do not run into problems e.g. by removing the device while data is being saved.

A good way to get information you need while on your trip is to post a question in a web community such Virtual Tourist, wait one or two days and then check it again. You can get notifications to your e-mail if someone replies to your post on the discussion forum so you do not have to log in to the community to check if you have received any answers.

Chat programs

Using a chat program such as Windows Live Messenger), Skype or ICQ is a great way to keep in touch with people at home. You can keep conversations going with several people at the same time, send pictures, etc. Many programs also allow you to use a web cam and a microphone which enables you to make simple video calls to people. You can sometimes also make calls to fixed telephones and cell phones at very competitive rates. Check out your preferred service for details.

Personal Experience - The Evil E-mail Esquapade

Once when I was logging in to Hotmail on an remote Internet café the guy before me had forgotten to log off. I could not resist the opportunity and quickly sent a fake love letter to a woman randomly chosen from his contact list. As if this was not enough, I came back a few days later and, can you believe it, the same guy had forgotten to log off again. Evil as I am (sometimes) I read her reply. She said she was a bit unsure of what he meant - for obvious reasons. I replied to her once more telling how much I really loved her. Perhaps they are married now. Sometimes you have to help people getting their feelings kick-started

Best backpack for traveling with my digital SLR?

I have been shoping around for a backpack that can hold my SLR, papers/maps, water bottle, maybe my laptop and toher stuff a backpack holds lol. I am a missionary and i am in some very rough areas, and rough conditions; so light, and mobile are huge to me, i will even be up to a should bag. Need it to be low in price as well. Trying to decide between DSLR and high quality Point and shoot.?

I know that a person's "shooting" situation determines the camera and lens combo needed. The problem is that I really can't afford a lot of equipment right now but do want to good quality photos.

Given the situation you're describing, I would tend to go with a point and shoot for several reasons.

1. More compact and lighter. When backpaking, you need to watch both. Which leads to --

2. Easier access. Since a point and shoot is generally going to be smaller, you can get at it more easily when you have it stowed away.

3. Less expensive. If you damage it beyond repair, you won't be out a lot of money if you have to replace it.

4. Lower battery drain. You will probably get more shots from your batteries with a point and shoot than you will with a DSLR. Even so, you will need to take several spare batteries with you since there aren't too many places in the wilderness where you can recharge your batteries.

As far as a favorite, there are so many good cameras available it's hard to make a recommendation. I have shot Nikons for years so when I went from film to digital, I went with Nikon. Nikon have several good entry level point and shoots as well as a good entry level DSLR.

Folks complain that Canon and Nikon get recommended more than the other cameras out there. That's because there are more Canon and Nikon uses than the others, and we tend to be loyal to our cameras. Figure out what features you need and see which camera best meets those needs. If you're not sure, go to you local camera store and see what they've got. trying to find a good reliable camera backpack?

ok I'm going with a group of photographers to New Zealand this fall and we will will be there for a whole month. We will be doing a lot of walking and some hiking and doing a lot of shoots! What type of camera bag should I buy for a Grand Canyon trip? Also should I purchase a generic lens?

I have a Nikon D50, 28-80 lens, SB-600 flash and a Sony Handicam. I plan on purchasing a wide angle lens before the trip. I may only take my wide angle lens and leave the 28-80 at home. I like the backpack bags, but I will also have a regular backpack. (We are hiking all the way down and camping out). What things should I consider when shopping for a camera bag?

Though many people worry about how and what to pack before traveling to the Caribbean, the process are often far simpler than it seems. Everyone already knows that the Caribbean is known for its beaches, clear water and fantastic weather. Therefore, the best method of packing for the Caribbean lies in traveling light, but preparing for the unexpected. If you follow the tips outlined here before packing for your Caribbean vacation, you shouldn't have any trouble packing the right items and preparing your family for the perfect getaway.

1. Before you start packing your clothes, try to organize all of your important documents - including your passport, driver's license, airline tickets or boarding passes and any other papers you might need for your itinerary in the Caribbean. As you prepare to leave, pack these items in a small secure bag or in the exterior pocket of your carry-on luggage. Also, make sure your prescription medications are stored in their original bottles and packed for easy access.

2. Next, start packing your carry-on bag. It is generally a good idea to pack your toiletries and one change of clothes in the event your luggage is delayed. Try to pack light in regards to toiletries as nearly every Caribbean resort will have items such as towels, soap and shampoo available. Make sure you also keep any valuable items, especially electronics such as laptops and cameras, in your carry-on bags. If you do pack a camera, make sure to take extra film or memory cards.

3. When it is time to start packing your main bag, try to use a wheeled suitcase, if possible. If you visit some of the smaller Caribbean islands, you may find that you need to carry your bags from the runway. Also, when trying to reach your hotel and moving between locations, a wheeled suitcase can relieve an incredible amount of strain.

4. Packing a wardrobe for a Caribbean vacation can be a challenge for many people. Remember that the Caribbean climate is typically mild, but you may experience some rain depending on where you travel. Start by packing plenty of socks and underwear. Next, add two or three pairs of cotton or linen pants and the same number of shorts. These lightweight fibers dry quickly and are less bulky than jeans. Each member of the family will want to pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket in the event of storms. Men will want to pack a decent number of t-shirts as well as some simple polo shirts for more formal occasions. In the evenings, a polo shirt can be paired with a lightweight sweater or cotton blazer. Women will want to add at least one dress for formal occasions. Lastly, all members of the family should try to roll each article of clothing before packing to conserve space and minimize wrinkling.

5. Both men and women should pack a pair of comfortable sneakers (for most general activities), sandals (for the beach and casual settings), water shoes (for use when engaging in water sports) and one pair of formal shoes (for nice dinners and events).

6. Prepare for plenty of water and even more sun when traveling to the Caribbean. Take along a pair of swimsuits, some sunglasses with good UV protection, plenty of waterproof sunscreen (at least SPF 30), a wrap or sarong if desired and hats to protect your head and face from the sun. If you plan on snorkeling in the Caribbean, consider packing your own; you will assure yourself the use of clean gear with minimal cost. It is also a good idea to prepare for sunburns by packing lip balm and a few bottles of lotion or aloe vera gel. If you plan on hiking or spending time outdoors away from the beach, you should also consider packing bug repellant.

7. When you are finished packing, make sure you will have enough space left over to squeeze in all of your Caribbean souvenirs. If your bag is a tight squeeze, try eliminating a few articles of clothing. Another way to conserve space is to wear all of your bulkiest items to the airport. However, to avoid any headaches once you reach the airport, place all of your metal accessories inside your carry-on luggage. Lastly, toss in a small backpack or tote bag for use during day-trips.

If you follow these simple packing tips when traveling to the Caribbean, you shouldn't have to worry about forgetting anything or packing the wrong items. As long as you plan ahead and focus on packing light, you will be able to enjoy every step of your Caribbean vacation without being weighed down by your luggage.

Issues and Tips for Adventure Photography

Adventure photography is one of my hobbies as a photographer. Taking photo on rainforest and mountain ranges, Adventure photography as far as I know is very abusive and dangerous to your cameras.

Here are some issues and tips you need to know and be aware to minimize damages to your cameras during adventure photography

Sweat – from your head to your arm and trickling into your hand and surely find its way into your camera. Be sure to bring some gloves, this will prevent sweat from running straight to your camera. This will help you protect your hand and fingers from sharp edges.

Tripod – Bring the lightest tripod. Many a times when we didn't bring ours with us, the moonlit landscape made us scrambling, looking for rocks, boulders, tree stumps and trees to place our long exposures.

Lens and a walkabout lens – Bring two good lenses and one "trek lens" 17-85mm (or wide with fixed aperture like F/2 and a 70-200mm with a fixed aperture (F/4). Forest is frightening nightfall place and you need that fast lens F/2. Trek lens is the lens that you walk with along the trail and your zoom lens that go from 18 to 250 or 28 to 300.

Camera Battery – last 1 day in the forest during your adventure photography. If it’s your first experience on adventure photography you would be shooting anything you haven't seen before. If your SLR can take AA, bring more. Testing your SLR energy consumption rate is important.

Cold Drains Batteries – If one you are shooting along the mountainous region, expect that your battery deplete its charge 50% in 3 or 4 hours doing nothing. Make shure to keep your battery from cold.

Memory Card at least 4GB – You be shooting and taking pictures something like 4GB – 6GB a day as well bring portable storage device. Separate your blank memory card and its container on your pocket and filled memory card on your bag. Your camera's LCD says you have 15 shots remaining, obviously replace the card.

Shoot Raw – Shoot raw instead of TIFF or DNG, CRW for Canon cameras, NEF for Nikon cameras and PEF for Pentax camera. Some definitions are lost during the conversion on any other format. RAW saves everything that it saw. RAW is probably the most dominant format for post-processing. It allows you to manage more over the images.

Vest and Cargo Pants – For outdoor photographers. Your vest is great to keep things like your blank memory cards, filters and spares. I recommend the vest with the waterproof pockets and with ventilated mesh. It keeps the camera and bag straps from slipping off your shoulder.

Swiss Knife – Get the one with the longest blade. A 4 inch sharp blade can shave off a young coconut faster than a machete. Make sure you have one on you at all.

Lighter dark at night – As for the lighter, you can use that to start a camp-fire or cook something when you are lost or stranded in the woods/forest during adventure photography.

Compass/Map/GPS – study the forest you are trekking. Remember the landmarks on the terrain in relation to the compass heading. For the GPS, get the type that can read signals indoors. Most hand-held GPS are useless inside the forest and you need to find an open window.

Tent – You need a waterproof and wind resistant tent. Two Man tent is enough to keep you and your things.

Backpack – put everything very important first you need into this bag, 50 litres will do. You could get a bigger backpack like the 70 litres but the bigger the backpack, you probably end up with a broken back or a slipped disc.

Adventure Photography teaches you to be good and condemnatory of your own works in just about all other photography such as potrait, street, architectural, landscape, macro, action/sport etc... you have to work with what is available.

Beside your camera equipments, the most essential factor is your health and fitness. By being physically fit and healthy, you will enjoy your adventure photography that goes with it.

Photographic equipments for Jeju-do island, S. Korea?

Hi there,
I have decided to place my photographic equipments in a backpack design for cameras to Jeju-do next month in the week of Christmas. This backpack is good enough to accommodate the following inventory and the bag is whether proof.

Of all the journeys we have ever taken, those romantic vacations to Italy still linger in my mind and heart, resonating magic into my everyday life for months if not years after the fact. Italy's long and enduring past, her extraordinary history stretching back into antiquity, her volatile geology which in turn has created her dramatic geography, all combine to make Italy a kingdom of storybook landscapes, always ready to be discovered and celebrated anew by this year's crop of avid tourists. In case you will be among them (the avid tourists, that is) in the coming months, and because it's rude to show up unprepared and uninformed, here's a little background and history on one of Europe's most popular vacation destinations.

Probably the most recognizable feature on Europe's map, Italy's ever-stylish boot stretches from the Alps in the north, 760 miles south to the Mediterranean. Off the west coast of Italy lies the Tyrrhenian Sea, while the east coast is kissed by the Adriatic. With a population over 58 million, and land mass of 300,000 square kilometers, Italy is the fourth largest country in western Europe and has so much to offer tourists and vacationers you will be spoiled for choice.

Visitors to Italy have long flocked to vacation along her dramatic coastlines, to explore her picturesque Tuscan hill towns, or tour her profusion of art treasures and archeological finds. But did you know that Italy also has a great deal of stunning mountain scenery? Travelers to northern Italy fall in love with the Italian lakes: Como, Maggiore, Garda and Lugano, which lie surrounded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes of Italy's Dolomites.

The Apennine Range runs north-south through the vertical length of the boot. Offering yet more beautiful scenery for your digital camera to devour, the Apennines are home to several of the world's best known volcanoes - Stromboli, Vesuvius, and Etna among them. Sicily is the island right off the south-western tip of the boot. Sardinia is the large island off the west coast, in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Italy's Ancient Past

Archeologists tell us that the migration of early Indo-Europeans into the Italian Peninsular probably began over four thousand years ago. Greeks settled Italy's southern tip in the eighth and seventh centuries B.C. while the ancient Etruscan civilization dominated the peninsular from the ninth century BC until the Romans swept through from Gaul to the Mediterranean six hundred years later.

After the fall of Rome's great empire in the fifth century AD, the Italian Peninsular became prey to foreign invasion from many quarters and as a result, evolved into a collection of fractious states and small kingdoms.

Within a few hundred years, the French, the Ottomans and the Holy Roman Emperors, had all at various times waged wars and fought battles to lay claim to Italy's territories. With the advent of global exploration in the middle ages and the ensuing surge of international trading, wealthy city-states like Venice and Genoa rose to prominence and power. The Italian provinces were first united into one country by Napoleon, who conquered the Italian peninsular and proclaimed himself king in 1805. By 1861 Victor Emmanuel ll, formerly king of Sardinia, had taken power and Italy now included the Veneto and papal Rome.

Twentieth Century Italy

After World War 1, Benito Mussolini organized his fascist party and in 1922 became Prime Minister. Italy was now a dictatorship with imperialist designs, invading and occupying Ethiopia in 1935 and Greece in 1940. Allied with Adolf Hitler in World War 2, Mussolini's regime was doomed and he was executed by Italian partisans in 1945. The Italian democratic Republic was founded the following year.

In the latter half of the twentieth century, Italian government and politics was a very volatile, revolving door affair, fraught with corruption scandals and patronage, and despite best efforts it remains so in many ways today. In 2003 the Italian parliament passed a law conferring immunity from prosecution on high ranking government officials while in office. As is the case in many capitalist systems, government positions are still handed out as political favors, and big corporations buy lucrative government contracts with their financial support.

Italy has little in the way of natural resources, so most raw materials needed by industry, including more than three quarters of the country's energy consumption, are imported. Agriculture has become less dominant than in the past, but grain, livestock, dairy, fruit and olive orchards are still prominent, as of course is viticulture, the production of Italy's most famous export, wine. In addition, tourism is a major contributor to Italy's income.

So now you know a few things about Italy you may not have known before we began, and you can embark on your Italian vacation with the confidence that only comes of... well, knowing a thing or two. Whether you are heading for the Italian Alps, the Tuscan countryside, the restless streets of Rome or the beaches of Capri, be ready to embrace la dolce vita... the good life. The Italians have perfected it as an art form, and if you pay attention, they'll be more than happy to show you how it's done.

Best waterproof camcorder? I am looking for 8MP, HD video and a 60fps mode @ 640?

Honestly, I don't think this is to much to ask for. I would like a camcorder that is waterproof for sailing and rainy days. If I can dive with it that is a bonus. I could buy a nice camcorder and a big bulky underwater case but that more that I want to deal with. Compact is nice to have, I see some from Sanyo but only 2MP for stills? Really? In a new camera... my phone has a better camera..
I can get 8MP from them but loose high def.
I also want a video capture mode that supports 60fps or better, since I would like to capture and analyze golf swings.
Does ANYONE that knows more about video capture than me know where I can find a this combo of features?

The best fit would be a Sanyo VPC-E2BL OR VPC-E2W. These meet most of you needs other then no external mic and the battery will only last 70 mins while recording video. Honestly you asking way to much, there aren't that many waterproof cameras, and there are even less that shot hd video, and even less that shoot video at 60 fps.

How do I wipe clean an Apple Imac G5 hard drive and reload the operating system?

I am giving this computer to a friend and don't want any of my old information to be accessable. I tried to just reload the operating system and all my desktop icons were still there with my preferences. I want to reload this hard drive and start from scratch.

Put the CD that came with your computer into the drive and restart your computer. Once you hear the boot chime, hold the c key until your computer boots. It'll boot from the Mac OS X installer. Start the install process, and select Options in the bottom left hand corner once you see it, and select "Erase and Install". Finish the install process, you're done!

Lexar Professional Compact Flash Card Review

Today we are going take a look at the new Lexar Professional UDMA 300x Compact Flash Memory Card. This card has been designed with the digital SLR camera user in mind and the heavy speed requirements associated with such products.

Digital SLR cameras are not only increasing in pixels but also in processor speed and so there is a need to store the information from the sensor rapidly and reliably. It is essential that the storage medium keeps pace with the processing power of the latest SLR cameras and so Lexar have come up with the latest Compact Flash memory card, the Lexar Professional UDMA 300x.

The standard write speed of most cards was about 1-2mb per second, this as increased through 4x, 8x etc to a point now where 133x write speeds have become common place and many professional photographers have memory cards of this speed and higher in their bags.

The Lexar Professional UDMA 300x Compact Flash® memory card was built to provide ultimate high-speed performance with an emphasis on reliability for the professional and advanced enthusiast photographer. The card work in unison with a UDMA enabled reader to supply dramatically increases card read and write transfer rates.

The card has also been design with a certain amount of future proofing as a lot of the latest SLR professional cameras come with the next generation of high-resolution UDMA technology. The Lexar Professional UDMA CF card is also available in smaller sizes including 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities.

So how much better can it be to use one of these card, what kind of advantage does it give? Well the simple answer is that speed equals time. The memory cards can write information far quicker saving time which means no delay in being ready to catch the next great shot. We tested this on a standard dSLR camera from Cannon using a 1gb memory card. We held the shutter for 10 seconds and managed to record just 8 frames. Removing the card only and replacing it with the Lexar Professional UDMA 300x Compact Flash memory card saw an increase in frames from 8 to 16. So we doubled the frame rate just by replacing the memory card. Now that's what I call an easy upgrade path.

The Lexar Memory Card as an official read/write speed based at a minimum write speed capability of around 300x (45MB/sec) quiet amazing when you think about it. The memory card also includes some useful little Extras. The Lexar Professional UDMA 300x card includes Lexar's own Image Rescue™ 3 software. This is a very useful bit of software and should help you recover any deleted images or files without too much trouble and this includes corrupted data retrieval. The Image Rescue™ 3 software can also make sure that all the images you do not require anymore can be removed correctly and the memory card reformat securely to ensure no one can access your used data.

The read speeds on the Lexar Professional UDMA 300x card are very fast and this means that you will spend less time downloading the data to your computer or checking shots etc. although. Another good point is that the memory card comes with a limited lifetime warranty and a dedicated customer support line that's free to customers. A useful thing when you consider the cost and value of such a memory card.

Verdict we where very impress with the speed of this memory card and if you are in the situation where time is money then I would recommend this card highly. The true advantages of having such read and write speed buffer clearing ability is a very useful point shooting fast moving action shots such as sports or wildlife

So in summary, the things we liked about the Lexar Professional UDMA 300x Compact Flash® memory card:

• High-speed UDMA performance and reliability, especially when used with an appropriate UDMA reader.
• Dramatically improves the transfer speeds of data from your card to any other storage device.
• Includes the very useful and easy to use Image Rescue™ 3 software.
• And finally, it comes with a Limited lifetime warranty.

The negative points are:

• This card is only for the deep of pocket and may be overkill for general photographic requirements.

Ok ... you need to put more space between your "model" and the wall. Product shots also require off camera flash work ... not the popup flash that's built in.

To shoot a product shot like that, I would use 3 lights with umbrellas.

You can get all that you need on ebay for about 300$...

BTW, I own the setup I'm suggestiong (give or take a few slight differences and I jusrt ordered 4 more flashes and 2 trigger kits extra).

You can get a pretty inexpensive kit that is actually worth getting for around 300$.

Get 2 or 3 YUNGTUO YN-460 shoe mount flashes (or more ... I'm about to order a couple more). They are in expensive (43$) but work great. They just don't have any of the fancy features you would use for on camera lighting but since this is for studio lighting it doesn't matter,

Technology Innovations continue to surprise us with new and improved products to help make our lives easier and our days go smoother. Touch screen technology is one of the technologies that has emerged to help make our days go by a bit more efficiently, allowing people to access their calendars, address databases, and memo records all with just one tap of a screen. The biggest drawback about it is that sometimes, fingers get in the way of touch screen technology. This is where Microsoft's new LucidTouch technology has come to the rescue in efforts to solve this problem.

LucidTouch Technology Works in Reverse

Currently the type of touch screen technology that most people are used to has to do with pressing their finger on a point and making an application pop up. While this may seem just well and fine, there are some people who are a great deal busier than that and have to be able to do multiple things at once-including type emails and open email applications at the same time.

With LucidTouch technology by Microsoft, there is no problem with the fingers blocking the screen because the hands are behind the device. Similar to a projector screen the image of the hands is projected through the device and to your eyes, and the actual touch screen capabilities are on the backside of the device. This means no more having to hold your device in one hand and tap the touch screen with another.

The image of the user's hands can be seen through the screen, making it especially useful for games and things like navigational systems. It gives the illusion of the actual device being see-through, when really it is just the LucidTouch technology transmitting an image of the hand through the screen onto the person's eyes. This helps greatly, allowing even the busiest of people to see the screens and navigate through the screens at the same time without their hands getting in the way.

Where did Microsoft LucidTouch Technology Come From?

Many users feel that Microsoft's LucidTouch technology came from nowhere, and it really did. The touch screen being blocked by the fingers has been one of those problems that plenty of users had but few actually cared enough to speak up about, and the new technology has just emerged at the right time to make users in general that much more efficient with their phones. It makes business phones that much more easily worked and even simplifies GPS navigational devices. While the technology is sensitive to a person's touch, it is also not so sensitive that it jumps at every little tap to the screen, which is one problem with the Iphone and other phones whose whole front is a touch activated screen.

What is next for Microsoft? Only time can tell, and this LucidTouch technology has not yet entered the mainstream market. AS a matter of fact, it was only introduced and put on display for the first time at a technology show in early March 2008, so many people don't even know that this amazing technology is coming at them. In the meantime, it will surely be tweaked and redefined as time goes on, making for an even better piece of equipment once the final product rolls off of the lines-whenever that may happen to be. On October 26, 1881 the most famous event of the Old West took place in Tombstone, Arizona. It has come to be known as the shootout at the OK Corral. More movies have been made about this event than any other in the Old West. And, true to Hollywood's reputation, they didn't let the facts stand in the way of a good story.

In December of 1879 the Earps arrived in Tombstone. Their interest was to get a piece of the action that resulted from the mines. At this time the cowboys were the political power in the Tombstone. And the money was good. For instance Sheriff Behan was supposedly making about $40,000 a year. That's equivalent to about $700,000 today.

The shootout was actually a turf fight between two gangs. The cowboys were Democrats, rural people and the establishment. The Earps were Republicans, city folk and the new-bee's.

The Earp gang comprised of more than Wyatt, Morgan, Virgil and Doc. There were two other Earp brothers - James and Warren. In addition, there was Bat Masterson and Luke Short. Although not as well known, Luke Short was every bit the gunman that Wyatt and Bat were.

For a variety of reasons only four members of the Earp gang participated in the shootout. James Earp had gotten his fill of shooting in the Civil War. Warren Earp had gotten shot in a ruckus in Mexico, and was staying with his parents in California. Bat Masterson had left to help his brother, James, in Dodge City. And Luke Short had killed a man in self-defense a few months earlier. And he had left town to prevent one of the man's friends from shooting him in the back.

After two years of threats and tough talk the feud came to a boil. A group of cowboys headed by the Clantons, who had been a thorn in the side of the Earps, were illegally carrying guns. Virgil Earp, the town Marshall, deputized faro dealers, Wyatt, and Morgan and gambler Doc Holliday to help him take the guns away.

Now, here's where myth starts running amuck. First off...the shootout didn't take place at the O.K. Corral. It took place in a vacant lot a block away. The lot was only 15-feet wide with building on either side. At the time of the shootout the lot was packed with 9 men and 2 horses. And the men were only six feet from each other.

Each of the Earp group probably approached the confrontation with different objectives. Virgil was looking for a peaceful end. He was carrying Doc's cane in his gun hand. Wyatt probably wanted to crack open their heads with his pistol. He had removed it from the holster to his coat pocket. But Doc wanted a shootout. And Morgan, a hothead, probably wanted one also.

Some movies have the fight going on forever throughout Tombstone. It lasted only 30 seconds. But during those 30 seconds more than 30 shots were fired.

Cowboys Billy Clanton and brothers Frank and Tom McLaury were all killed. Ike Clanton had a slight neck wound. Virgil Earp was shot in the leg. Morgan was shot in the arm. And Doc Holliday had a slight wound in his hip. Wyatt, as was the story throughout his life, came away unscathed.

After the shootout, the tide turned against the Earps. At a preliminary hearing Wyatt and Doc appeared as defendants. Virgil and Morgan were unable to be there because of their injuries. Although there wasn't enough evidence for a trial, Virgil Earp was dismissed as city marshal, and Wyatt was forced to give up his faro game at the Oriental.

In December Virgil was shot by some cowboys...loosing the use of his right arm. And three months later Morgan was killed while playing pool...again by cowboys.

The town of Tombstone was comfortable with the cowboys and their ways. And the Earp's presence was causing trouble with the status quo. So, getting the message the Earps left town.

However, Wyatt came back, and with some of his friends, evened the score with the cowboys. Now, there's a difference of opinion as to how many cowboys he actually killed, but a number of them died.

shift all your weight to one foot and wind up your stick as a fake out.. than if he drops, shoot it up high, below the cross bar. i would say try to freeze him and shoot between his pads, but that hardly ever works for me.. don't have a quick enough slapshot i guess
