Backpack or laptop bag?

I'm starting college and I've got a laptop and books I need to carry around for half a day, twice a week.

I have a really big backpack that has a laptop sleeve inside, but with the books it's really heavy and I'm afraid it's too big for ease of use.

Should I get a smaller backpack, keep the one I've got, or get a separate laptop bag to carry and also wear a backpack for books?

I also want to put my wallet, keys, cellphone, etc. inside of whatever I use to carry my books. Is this safe? I don't want to be a theif target.
I'm at community college, commuting from home. My classes are all 10 min.s apart. They have lockers at the college, but I don't know if they cost 25 cents per use or just one quarter to re-use.

Even if my backpack is too heavy should I carry one? I don't have enough time to put books back in my car.

But will I be putting myself under that much stress if I'm going to college two days a week?
