Important Items to Pack for a Vacation
Packing for a vacation is often the worst part of any trip. I have learned over the years that having a good packing list is not only essential, but it can make the process a lot easier and faster. And please note that the lists below are comprehensive lists of suggestions. You will want to review them and modify them for your own wants and needs.
Essential Items:
- 3 copies of airline tickets, cruise tickets, passports/visas, itinerary - pack 1 copy in carry on, 1 copy in checked luggage, and leave one copy with someone at home
- airline tickets or e-ticket confirmation
- a form of picture ID if you don't take driver's license
- batteries for any items requiring them such as digital cameras
- battery charger
- binoculars
- bug spray
- business cards to give out to new friends
- cash or traveler's checks (be sure to keep traveler's checks receipt in separate location)
- cell phone and charger
- contact numbers to report lost/stolen credit cards or traveler's checks
- corkscrew (be sure to put in checked luggage)
- credit cards - be sure to call credit card companies before traveling to alert them you are traveling outside your normal area ATM card
- cruise documents
- currency conversion chart
- digital camera and manual
- disposable underwater camera - for snorkeling or beach days
- driver's license and auto insurance card - in case you decide to rent a car when ashore
- ear plugs
- emergency numbers at home
- empty folding tote bag - for souvenirs or for use on the beach
- extension cord with multiple plug-ins
- extra film (don't put undeveloped film in checked luggage)
- extra memory cards for digital camera
- extra plastic cable-lock ties for securing luggage for return trip (better than locks, but one-time use only)
- extra reading glasses
- foreign language phrase book or dictionary
- glasses, contacts, contacts cleaner
- guidebooks and other port of call information
- hand lotion
- handi-wipes
- hats/caps/visors
- home and email addresses of friends/relatives back home - for sending postcards, emails, or gifts
- insulated large coffee mugs
- journal or notebook and pen/pencil
- laptop computer
- maps
- medical insurance cards and medical history (especially if traveling alone)
- night light
- passports and visas (if necessary) or proof of citizenship (check with your cruise line for requirements)
- PDA and charger
- pre-paid phone card
- prescription drugs and any other essential medications in carryon bag
- reading material - books to read while lounging by the pool
- rubbing alcohol or foot lotion for soothing tired, hot feet
- sewing kit and scissors (pack in checked luggage)
- small first aid kit
- small flashlight
- small travel alarm clock - battery operated
- small umbrella
- sports gear (e.g. snorkeling gear)
- sun screen/sun block and chapstick
- sunglasses
- vaccination certificate (if required)
- walkman or MP3 player
- wallet and fanny pack

- zip loc bags of all sizes and garbage/laundry bags
